The repelling nature of the negatively charged phosphates necessitates energy for attachment. The stored energy in ATP, holding the phosphates together, is released when the third phosphate is removed. This liberated energy is then employed to make or break covalent bonds.

The resulting adenosine diphosphate (ADP) can undergo a cyclic transformation, becoming ATP once more.
